The Martha’s Vineyard Slave Song Choir, under the direction Of Jim Thomas, will provide a performance of songs sung by the slaves, interspersed with information on how each song served a purpose for these people who were forbidden to speak to each other.
Jim Thomas is an alumnus of Fisk University where he sang and travelled with the Fisk Jubilee Singers. He already knew many of the
slave songs when he arrived at Fisk in 1956, having learned them as a child while fishing with a great grandmother born into slavery in Tennessee in the 1840’s.
